Description
Two family trees. One adopted woman. One medieval king. Absolutely no castle.
Michelle Hoffmann always knew she was adopted. What she didn’t know was that researching her biological ancestry would send her backward through centuries of family history until she landed somewhere completely unexpected: the family tree of King Edward I of England.
That was surprising enough.
Then she researched the family that adopted and raised her.
And Edward showed up again.
Suddenly, a perfectly reasonable genealogy project had turned into an investigation involving Plantagenets, castles, forgotten women, migrating families, questionable online family trees, Wild Bill Hickok, more people named Edward than any genealogist should have to tolerate, and one increasingly important question:
If Michelle has royal ancestry coming at her from two directions, where the hell is her castle?
I’m Royal. So Where’s My Castle? follows Michelle through the funny, messy, fascinating business of discovering where we come from—and figuring out what any of it actually means. Along the way, she digs into the history behind the names, separates family stories from documented evidence, encounters ancestors both famous and almost forgotten, and discovers how quickly a neat family tree becomes thousands of complicated human lives.
At the center is a story about adoption and two very different kinds of family history: the biological family Michelle had to discover backward and the adoptive family she knew through childhood, memory, stories, and love. Somehow, centuries before either family could have imagined her, their histories appear to wander into the same medieval dynasty.
The castle, unfortunately, remains unaccounted for.
The cats remain unimpressed.
And Michelle would still like to speak to the Royal Accounting Department.
